A Quick Chat with the lovely Waydene Laing

We have been REALLY enjoying this new series of blog posts, and absolutely loving featuring some of our favourite humans! Here's another one from the very lovely Waydene...

During this time she performed in the National Children’s Theatre production of The Little Prince. In 2016, Waydene was selected as one of 30 South African YouTubers for the Cell C Break The Net competition where she made it through to the Top 10. In 2017, Waydene was cast as Hazel Jacobs in the SABC 1 soapie Skeem Saam.

1. How do you prep yourself for a photo session? (Any skincare, eating, exercising etc tips)

I usually start prepping for a photoshoot a week or more in advance. I find that the more prepared I am, the better the shoot will go. Treating my body well in the weeks and days leading up to the photoshoot is important, but I also don’t try things I’ve never done before. I keep my skincare routine the same so as not to react to any new products, and as I have very dry skin, I use a face mask to hydrate and illuminate my face. I try my best to stay away from sweets and chocolates so that I avoid my skin breaking out. As well as drinking lots of water so that my skin glows from within. I also shop around for outfits that will compliment my skin tone and the theme or characters I have in mind. Plain coloured clothing always works best for me, and making sure I feel comfortable in whatever I’m wearing.

2. What tips or advice would you give to other business owners planning their head shot/personal branding session?

Don’t leave the planning until the last minute! Give yourself enough time to plan your looks, and what you would like to achieve with the photos. When you have a clear vision you’ll feel a lot more comfortable and confident in front of the camera, and Robyn and her team can always advise you on what to do in order to achieve what you have envisioned. Another tip is to be yourself. I still always feel so clumsy and awkward in front of the camera, but I’ve realised it reveals a piece of me and once you get over that stage in the photoshoot you can really have some fun!

3. Why do you find that it's a good idea to book a head shot/personal branding session with a professional photographer?

Although I own a DSLR myself, and most camera phones can take very good pictures, I always prefer to choose a professional photographer for my headshots. Not only do you get incredible quality photographs that are seamlessly edited to reveal your best features, you get a professional photographer that is able to guide you in what to do. A professional photographer will know how to achieve the best lighting, what poses and angles are best suited to your body, as well as making you feel comfortable to bring out your best.

4. Tell us the most exciting thing about your week and why you love what you do?

As a freelance creative my week is always unpredictable. And I love it! My week is filled with attending theatre shows, events, film reviews as well as the occasional casting or audition, or even working on social media for exciting projects! I also love to travel, and I’m so excited for the adventures I get go on through camping with my family.
